Biographie

Professeure agrégée de la faculté de droit de l’Université Laval (Canada), Julia Grignon est docteure de l’Université de Genève (Suisse). Sa thèse de doctorat, récompensée des Prix Paul Reuter et Walther Hug et qui a fait l’objet d’une publication aux éditions Schulthess/LGDJ, portait sur L’applicabilité temporelle du droit international humanitaire. Spécialisée en droit des conflits armés, qui a été son domaine de recherches privilégié depuis plus de 15 ans elle a été amenée à diriger un projet de recherche relatif à l’application extraterritoriale du droit international des droits humains en contexte d’opérations militaires extérieures et un développement de partenariat destiné à promouvoir et renforcer le droit international humanitaire. Julia Grignon a enseigné et dirigé les travaux d’étudiant-e-s dans tous les domaines du droit international relatifs à la protection de la personne (droit international des droits humains, droit international des réfugiés et droit international pénal). Elle est l’auteure de nombreuses publications dans des revues à comité de lecture ou dans des ouvrages collectifs et a dirigé l’ouvrage Hommage à Jean Pictet (Cowansville/Genève: Yvon Blais/Schulthess). Elle est également coauteure du Online Casebook How Does Law Protect in war?. Outre des enseignements ponctuels et/ou des séjours de recherche en tant que professeure invitée, tant en Amérique du Nord, en Europe ou en Afrique, Julia Grignon a effectué une année d’étude et de recherche au sein de l’Institut des droits de l’homme et de la paix de l’Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (Sénégal).

À l’Université Laval elle a cofondé puis codirigé le Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche sur l’Afrique et le Moyen Orient et codirigé la Clinique de droit international pénal et humanitaire. En plus d’appartenir à plusieurs sociétés savantes, elle a été membre du conseil scientifique de l’IRSEM de 2016 à 2021 et est membre du Comité pour le Concours Jean-Pictet depuis 2008.

Associate Professor of the Faculty of Law at Laval University (Canada), Julia Grignon holds a Ph.D from the University of Geneva (Switzerland). Her Ph.D thesis, that was awarded the Paul Reuter and Walther Hug Prizes and published at Schulthess/LGDJ, focused on the Temporal Scope of Applicability of International Humanitarian Law. Specialized in the Law of Armed Conflict, which has been her field of research for the past 15 years she has lead a research project relating to the extraterritorial application of International Human Rights Law in the context of external military operations and a development partnership that aims at promoting and strengthening International Humanitarian Law. Julia Grignon has taught and supervised student academic work in all the fields of International Law pertaining to the protection of human beings (International Human Rights Law, International Refugee Law, International Criminal Law). She has authored numerous publications in peer-review journals as well as in collective works and edited the book Tribute to Jean-Pictet (Cowansville/Genève: Yvon Blais/Schulthess). She is also one of the co-authors of the Online Casebook How Does Law Protect in war?. In addition to occasional teachings and/or researches as a visiting professor in North America, Europe and Africa, Julia Grignon spent a year of study and research at the Institut des droits de l’homme et de la paix of the University of Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar (Sénégal).

At Laval University, she co-founded and then co-directed the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Africa and the Middle East and co-directed the International Criminal and Humanitarian Law Clinic. In addition to belonging to several learned societies, she was a member of the IRSEM Scientific Council from 2016 to 2021 and has been a member of the Committee for the Jean-Pictet Competition since 2008.
