Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO
Friday 15 December 2023
"Baltic Area: Risks and security issues" seminar series
"Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO".
December 15th - 9:30 am to 11:30 am
Irsem - Military School - Salle 42
The seminar will be held in French.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, two neutral countries have expressed their desire to join NATO: Finland and Sweden. What are the reasons behind Helsinki and Stockholm's decision to abandon their tradition of neutrality, which dates back several decades in the case of the former, and to the end of the Napoleonic Wars in the case of the latter?
However, their request to join the NATO club met with fierce opposition from Turkey and Hungary. While Finland was finally able to join the Alliance in the spring of 2023, Sweden's ratification is still pending.
With contributions from Sophie Enos-Attali (Catholic University of Paris) and Amélie Zima (IRSEM), this seminar aims to provide keys for analyzing this radical change in strategic orientation and politicization of membership.
Seminar series co-organized by Céline Bayou (INALCO), Sophie Enos-Attali (Institut catholique de Paris), Céline Marangé (IRSEM) and Amélie Zima (IRSEM).
